* YP – Young Photographer. The YP section of the photo salon is judged separately and has its own prizes. However, all the photos are automatically entered into the main competition and, should they be awarded a merit or distinction, they receive an additional prize for being in the YP class.

* Certificates. We usually announce that certificates will be sent to winners of the Salon competitions but, due to a lack of volunteer effort, this has not happened in recent years. We are hoping to be able to rectify this in the aftermath of Hidden Earth 2025.

Caving Club Bednights

There were many donations of bed-nights by caving clubs this year. We thank them all for their support, which provides opportunities for cavers to meet other cavers across the country. This year the bednight winners got to choose from the range of donations, enabling them to visit a club hut in the caving region of their choice. Bednights were donated by ...

Photo Salon

This year, we decided to keep to the simplified structure of the Photo Salon that we have used since 2023. We awarded the Premier Trophy for the best portfolio of five images, and we awarded one prize in the print and projection classes; as well as merits and distinctions. (The traditional monochrome and colour print classes were, once again, merged into one).

This year, we once again ran our new competition for Young Photographers, defined as being under 22 years of age on the day of the competition. This competition used a separate organising team, with separate judges, and the team sought their own cash sponsorship for the additional prizes. The proviso was that the competition entries all had to be entered in the main photo salon as well, and had to use the main salon display boards. This worked well, and seemed a good way to balance the available volunteer effort with the presentation of a 'seamless' competition.

Once again, there was no Cave Life or Cave Science category. Additional competition categories such as these make the organisation much more difficult, all the way from the entry form, through to organising the labelling of the displays, the judging and the prize allocation. Our current view is that if there is a demand for additional special categories such as Cave Life or Cave Science than someone must step forward to organise the category along similar lines to the our Young Photographer category, that is, they must provide a team to do it.

Video Media Salon

Coordinator's feedback: The overall quality was very good. Our Judging system has been refined slightly from last year and it worked extremely well this time around. For next year we are moving over to a Goggle Forms Document for both the judging and the master score sheets.

Best Club Stand

Judges feedback: We were impressed with the interactive components, and the high quality of the photos and surveys, which were displayed well. The people on hand were helpful and full of information.

National Awards

Fraser Simpson Award for Innovation in video

This annual award is given by the Hidden Earth Team for recognition of excellence in underground video creation. Nominations, with reasons and examples of work are welcomed by the Hidden Earth conference manager in advance of the event. The work does not have to feature in the Video Salon. The award consists of a prize of £100, donated by Hidden Earth, and an engraved stone to keep for a year. Further information is at hidden.earth/salons/video/.

Fraser Simpson died in 2017. He was an audio-visual technical expert at Fife College, an accomplished caver and a key member of Grampian Speleological Group. Fraser was also a valued member of the Hidden Earth team, due to his extensive AV knowledge and expertise. His film-making skills were considerable and the Hidden Earth Team and BCRA Council have agreed to set up an annual award to commemorate him and his contributions. The criteria for the award sits in innovation and excellence within the world of speleological video.

2025 Award

Over the last two years a significant cave discovery has transformed a caving area with reports of extensive passages and beautiful formations. A vast amount of work has been recorded, as it happened, 'warts and all'. The judges were impressed by this innovative approach of serialising the discoveries in Redhouse Swallet and quickly reporting them to the wider world – something that has not done before on this scale, as far as the judges are aware. There have been 20 episodes so far, and exploration continues.

Thus, for 2025 the Frazer Simpson award is given to Ian Healey for his work on the Redhouse Swallet project and his video Redhouse - One Year On, which also won this year's Video Salon.

BCRA's Arthur Butcher Award

BCRA awards the Arthur Butcher prize for outstanding and innovative contributions to cave surveying. The judges consider projects brought to their attention during the year, as well as all surveying work that is on display at the Hidden Earth conference.

2025 Award

This year, the award was given to Becka Lawson for decades of surveying, drawing up, and badgering people in many many projects across the world. And particularly for training a lot of new people. More than one person we talked to described her as an inspiration, and some have gone on to be prolific surveyors themselves. Becka wins £100 from the British Cave Research Association

Citation by Wookey, on behalf of the judges:

BCRA's Tratman Award

The Tratman Award is presented annually to the best caving-related, paper-based publication in memory of E.K. Tratman, to recognise excellence in writing and presentation, encompassing aspects such as the subject's importance, readability, the quality of the photographs and surveys, the printing and binding and - in short - any aspect that the judges consider applicable. This also includes 'improvement' where, for example, long-established journals that have already received a commendation for their standard in previous years would need to show a higher standard again to attain a mention.

The Year of 2024 in Publications

British caving publications are among the best to be found anywhere in the world, a fact that is acknowledged annually with the Tratman Award which recognises excellence in writing, presentation and publication - also taking into account factors such as the quality of the images and surveys, printing, paper, binding and accessibility - of books, journals and individual articles. The judges, working on behalf of BCRA as sponsors of the award but remaining independent of the association in the final decision, also look for 'improvement' - that is, in the case of a journal or book series (for example), a publication that has previously won or gained a commendation would need to show an increased standard to be commended again in this prestigious award.

Unlike in 2023, when the judges had to consider a wide range of titles, for 2024 the number of books published was thin on the ground. After much discussion, this left the judges (Joe Duxbury, Chris Howes, Alan Jeffreys, Martin Mills and Linda Wilson) with an initial list shorter than usual, from which a literal short list was compiled. This was reduced to three books, one journal series and two articles:

As in recent years, the judges were presented with a problem, always likely to crop up when those most interested in literature are also involved in its writing and production, in that in two instances recusals were necessary. Thus, Alan Jeffreys was unable to comment on the inclusion of the GSG bulletin which he edits, and Chris Howes took no part in the decisions concerning the book portion of the award, being involved with publishing Adventures Underground.

All these authors should feel proud to receive their commendations. Even though the list of titles was short, much discussion and dissent then ensued over the eventual winner, this narrowing down to the three books. Of these, the Somerset Underground series had already won the award with volumes 1 and 2, with a commendation for volume 3, and for 2024 Rob gains another commendation. The choice of winner between Surrey's Ancient Stone Mines and Adventures Underground was closely fought.

One judge commented on the latter 'with amazement' on how much new material had been incorporated and that 'we should be very grateful to have seen such a work in our caving lifetime', while a different judge highly praised the original, far-reaching research seen in the former. In the end, with a split decision that noted that the first edition of Adventures Underground won in 2017, the Tratman Award 2024 finally goes to Peter Burgess with Surrey's Ancient Stone Mines; Adventures Underground received the accolade of being Highly Commended.

Congratulations to Peter Burgess for an honour achieved by his diligence and attention to detail in documenting what might otherwise be information lost to time. He receives a unique sculpture specially created by Ceris Jones, which he will retain in perpetuity.

Citation by Chris Howes, on behalf of the judges: Joe Duxbury, Chris Howes, Alan Jeffreys, Martin Mills and Linda Wilson

Giles Barker Award

The Giles Barker Award is presented to any person connected with any aspect of cave photography in recognition of excellence or contributions to the field; it has a wide remit to allow consideration of many areas of image creation. The award has been running since 1993 in memory of Giles, a keen cave photographer who died while caving in Spain in 1992. Giles was a member of the Red Rose CPC and Morgannwg CC, which together fund the special trophy which beautifully crafted annually by Ceris Jones.

For 2025 the prestigious Giles Barker Award, presented annually and jointly funded by the Red Rose CPC and Morgannwg CC, for continuing excellence in any aspect of cave photography, was presented to Bartek Biela at the Hidden Earth conference in September. Bartek’s creative imagery has visibly improved and become more prominent over the past few years – he has been taking cave photography at a serious level for around fifteen years and exhibiting the results over the past six, including some inspiring results from the sharp end of the 2024 Mulu expedition. In 2025 his imagery was chosen to represent Hidden Earth.

Bartek commented: ‘It is a great honour to receive the Giles Barker Award and it feels very special to be amongst the recipients, the ones I was always looking up to’.

Congratulations, Bartek, on receiving this 30th award in the series, which as usual is a fine trophy specially created by Ceris Jones that will be retained by Bartek in perpetuity.

A list of recent award winners can be found at: rrcpc.org.uk/giles-barker-award. Rules and a list of historical recipients of the award are at bcra.org.uk/awards.html.
